Best VPN with Smart DNS in 2026

Updated 17 October 2026 · 9 min read

NordVPN is the strongest default recommendation here because its subscription includes a currently documented SmartDNS option for TVs and other devices that cannot run a normal VPN app. ExpressVPN's MediaStreamer is the main alternative. Surfshark is no longer a Smart DNS pick: it discontinued the feature in February 2026.

Quick answer: which VPN has the best Smart DNS option?

Start with NordVPN if you need Smart DNS for a device without a native VPN app and also want a full VPN for phones and computers. Nord publishes a current setup route, an explicit supported-service list, and device guidance for Apple TV and LG TV. This is a source-checked recommendation, not a claim that VPN Rocks independently lab-tested every listed streaming service.

Smart DNS does not encrypt your traffic or provide the privacy protections of a VPN tunnel. Streaming availability can change, so check the provider's current support page and test your exact device and paid service during the refund window. Follow the streaming service's terms and local rules.

Choose Smart DNS

Use it when your TV or console cannot install a native VPN app and you only need the provider's supported streaming route.

Choose a VPN app

Use the normal VPN app when encryption, a selectable server location, or protection on untrusted networks matters.

Choose a router setup

Consider a compatible router when you want the full VPN tunnel to cover devices that cannot run an app, accepting the extra setup work.

Why NordVPN is the best default VPN with Smart DNS

NordVPN's current documentation gives buyers a concrete answer instead of a generic “streaming support” promise. SmartDNS is included with a NordVPN subscription, requires your original home IPv4 address to be allowlisted, and can then be configured through DNS settings on a compatible device. Nord says activation can take up to ten minutes.

Its support page also names the services it currently supports, including US-region Amazon Prime and Disney Plus, Netflix Originals, Paramount+, Peacock TV, Fubo TV, Fox services and Max. Treat that list as a current provider claim rather than a permanent guarantee. Nord explicitly says SmartDNS may not work with every service available through its VPN connection.

NordVPN SmartDNS setup checks

  • Allowlist the public IPv4 address used by the device; Nord says IPv6 is not supported for this activation route.
  • Disconnect other VPN or proxy connections before activation so the correct home IP is registered.
  • Confirm the exact service you want appears on Nord's current supported list before paying.
  • Do not treat Smart DNS as encrypted protection. Use the VPN app or a VPN-capable router for that.

ExpressVPN MediaStreamer: the main alternative

ExpressVPN's MediaStreamer serves the same broad device problem: it is a DNS route for devices that cannot run a VPN app. You register your public IP in your ExpressVPN account, retrieve the MediaStreamer addresses, and add them to the device's DNS settings. A changing home IP may require registration again.

The trade-off is unusually clear in ExpressVPN's own documentation: MediaStreamer is not a VPN, does not provide VPN privacy or security, and cannot change locations. That makes it an alternative for a narrow device setup—not a substitute for the ExpressVPN app when you need an encrypted tunnel.

Why Surfshark is no longer a Smart DNS pick

Older comparisons may still list Surfshark SmartDNS, but Surfshark discontinued it on 2 February 2026. Its current support guidance tells previous users to restore automatic DNS settings and consider a native TV app, compatible router, or VPN-protected Windows hotspot instead. Surfshark can still be a VPN option; it should not be sold as a current Smart DNS option.

If a native app or router is more practical for your home, see the Surfshark review without relying on the retired feature.

Smart DNS versus VPN: what changes?

  • Encryption: a normal VPN tunnel encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN server; Smart DNS does not.
  • Location control: VPN apps usually let you choose a server. Smart DNS follows the provider's predefined service routing and may not offer location choice.
  • Device fit: Smart DNS can help on devices with editable DNS settings but no VPN app.
  • Maintenance: services that register your public IP may need updating when your ISP changes it.
  • Reliability: streaming platforms and provider support can change, so no static comparison can guarantee future access.

Smart DNS buyer checklist

  1. Check whether your device has a native VPN app first; that is usually the clearer option when privacy matters.
  2. Confirm that you can edit DNS settings and whether the setup needs IPv4.
  3. Read the provider's current supported-service list rather than relying on an old review.
  4. Check whether your ISP changes your public IP and how the provider handles updates.
  5. Test the exact device, account and service during the refund window.
  6. Keep the original automatic DNS setting so you can restore it if connectivity fails.

For a broader purchase check, use the VPN buyer checklist. If streaming already fails, use the streaming VPN troubleshooter before changing several settings at once.

Smart DNS VPN FAQ

Does Smart DNS hide my IP address?

No. Smart DNS changes how selected DNS requests are handled; it does not create the encrypted VPN tunnel used to replace your device's public IP for general traffic.

Is Smart DNS faster than a VPN?

It has no VPN encryption overhead, but that does not guarantee better playback. Your connection, device, DNS route, streaming service and provider support all matter.

Can I use NordVPN SmartDNS in the UK?

Nord documents SmartDNS as an account feature, but its supported list includes several services specifically in their US region. Check the live support list against the service and region you actually need before subscribing.

Can Smart DNS and a VPN run together?

Follow the provider's setup instructions. Nord tells users to disconnect VPN connections while allowlisting the original IP, and mixing routes can make troubleshooting harder.

Which providers still offer Smart DNS in 2026?

Among the providers checked for this guide, NordVPN SmartDNS and ExpressVPN MediaStreamer have current support documentation. Surfshark SmartDNS has been discontinued.
