Why genetic data is different

Watch for scams that reference real family history, ancestry, ethnicity, account details or breach headlines. Breached data can make phishing feel personal. When a message claims to be from a genetic-testing company, open the official website yourself rather than following links in emails or texts.

Where a VPN helps — and where it does not

A VPN helps when the immediate risk is the network: hotel Wi-Fi, airport Wi-Fi, shared accommodation, or a local hotspot you do not trust. It can reduce local snooping and hide browsing destinations from the network operator.

A VPN does not undo a database breach, protect an account that uses a reused password, stop credential stuffing, remove exposed genetic data from criminal forums, or prove that a company is a safe long-term custodian of sensitive information.
