What happened?
Bitdefender warned on 6 August that fake pirated downloads for The Odyssey were already being used to distribute Lumma Stealer malware. The warning frames the campaign as a trojan-horse risk around piracy searches for the film.
The pattern is familiar: criminals watch for high-interest films, live sport or TV events, then seed search results, social posts or download portals with files that look like early copies, codecs, players or unlock tools. The user thinks they are getting a stream or download; the attacker wants passwords, session cookies, crypto wallets or device access.
Why it matters for streamers
Piracy malware is not just a copyright issue. Infostealers can collect saved browser passwords, authentication cookies, autofill data, wallet files and system details. That can turn one risky movie download into account takeover across email, banking, social, work and streaming accounts.
The risk is higher when a page asks you to disable security tools, install a special player, run a crack, paste a command, or sign in with a Google, Microsoft or Apple account before anything plays. Those are warning signs, not normal streaming steps.
What you can do now
Use legitimate streaming, rental or cinema routes where available, and avoid sites that promise brand-new releases as downloads or executable files. Do not install codec packs, browser extensions or video players from piracy pages, and do not enter primary account credentials into pop-ups opened from those sites.
If you already ran a suspicious file, disconnect the device from the network, run a reputable malware scan, change important passwords from a clean device, revoke suspicious sessions, rotate recovery codes, check MFA settings and watch for unusual email forwarding rules or payment activity.
Where a VPN helps — and where it does not
A VPN can help protect your connection on public Wi-Fi and reduce what your ISP or local network can see about your traffic. It can also be useful for lawful streaming while travelling when you need a more private connection.
But a VPN does not scan downloads, does not make piracy pages trustworthy, and does not stop malware you choose to run. If an infostealer executes on your laptop, the VPN tunnel is beside the point.

The safest streaming shortcut is usually no shortcut. If a site asks you to trade device control for a free early copy, the real price may be your accounts and identity data.
For legitimate streaming, choose a VPN for privacy, reliability and clear refund-window testing rather than as a way to ignore platform rules or malware risk.
